4 Tips To Keep Your Blog Content From Boring Us To Death

How to Write Good Blog Content

Okay so enough already with the "rules" of writing blog content already!  So many of us are so focused on the "rules"

that we forget the MOST important thing- the fact that someone actually has to READ the darn thing!

It has to be compelling.  And what are you compelling your readers to do?

I have to admit though, I am a natural-born writer, not all people who blog are.  You may be blogging out of necessity

for your business, in which case, you probably are not thrilled at all by the idea of coming up with unique,

compelling content week after week.  But you CAN do it.  I have put together 3 tips to help you create blog content

that is NOT boring.  Hope this helps guys!

1.  Compel Them To Do SOMETHING!!!

Every single blog post you write should have a purpose.  Of course you want to provide value and give great information with every blog post, but do you have a call

to action?  Great blog posts will compel the reader to take some sort of action. What are you compelling your readers to do?  It can be as simple as asking them to

share the post, or getting them to sign up for your emails.  Truly compelling content is also fun for your readers to read.  They will always come back for more.

2.  Quit Regurgitating The Same Ole Blog Content

The last thing you need is to be writing the same content that EVERY other blog in your niche is writing, or worse yet, the same things that you have already said.

One of the worse ruts to get into is to run out of things to talk about.  Don't forget that your life is full of inspiration.  You can take simple life lessons and apply

them to your niche.

People relate to normal, everyday life events.  It doesn't have to be all about business, all of the time.  It is a great way to integrate a  bit more personality into

your blog.  But don't forget to bring it back to business and compel them to do something.

3. Write As If You Were Talking To Your Friends

This is what separates the decent writers from the amazing writers.  The amazing writers have the ability to connect with you on a personal level without ever

meeting you at all.  How do they do this?  By simply having a conversation with you.

Quit stressing, this is not your English paper, and using "big" words and fancy wording, real people don't talk that way, so why should you write that way?

Truth is, it may look as if you are really educated, and that's great if that's what you want your peers to think… but I would rather have people reading my content.

And that highly educated, fancy worded mumbo-jumbo??? No one is reading.

People don't want to know how many "big" words you know or how college educated you are, or how vast your vocabulary is, people want to be able to easily read

your content.  Here are some great tips to improve your blog's readability from my friend Marie Leslie.

4. Educate Yourself, Then Write About It

One of the easiest ways to stand out from the competition and create compelling blog content that people actually want to read is to make sure you are staying

educated.  Are you carving time out of your work day to read up on your niche?  How else will you learn and keep up with the latest trends?  Staying educated will

help you create fresh, compelling blog content that will NOT put your readers to sleep!

  1. Great list. I'd add that if you bore yourself, you will bore your readers. If you have any.

  2. Awesome tips here! # 3 is my favorite :)

  3. Great article…no boredom here! :-)

  4. I love all of these tips Angela, thanks. You have a nice recipe for an interesting and informative blog here. And your reminder to write for your audience rather than for the rules is right on!  The title and picture that go along with this article had me liking it before I even started reading it!

  5. Great post! I'm new to blog writing and these are useful tips – thanks!

  6. Love the easily readable and easily digestible tips you got here!   You're saving 1 website 1 blog at a time =)

  7. I need to make sure I am always doing #1! This was a good reminder, thank you!

  8. Love the post! You are right there are some pretty blah blogs out there. Here's to hoping mine isn't one of them. I do try to use real life events to get the message across easier. I do this because although some won't outwardly admit they are going through or have gone through something similar, I know they have. Therefore the information hits a cord.

  9. Loved this!  I like it when people write they talk.  You get to see the person's personality come through!

  10. Angie,
Great reminders! Sometimes I think I should pay more attention to the rules of blogging…, but I like your emphasis on having a unique voice and agree that it's hard to have an engaging blog without it.

  11. Angela, great post.  Many thanks for the reminders.  It is so easy to get lost into the act and forget the readers.

  12. Great tips for people starting to blog! Appreciated

  13. Excellent tips for writing quality not quantity posts. For a long while I struggled with this. Then a friend told me to close my eyes, pretend I was sitting at Starbucks with a friend over coffee…visiting. Voila, now I have coffee as I share my stories and pretend all of my social media friends are enjoying a delightful conversation with me…via my blog. Hopefully I am not boring!

  14. Great tips Angela! I really like #1.  Thanks for sharing.

  15. Love the 'compel your readers to DO something' tip.  I never like completely contemplative posts…it's the ones that urge me to make a decision or really think through something that get me moving…love those!

  16. Oh I hope I can take a few tips about this away. My goal is to excite my readers and have them coming back for more! I hope that's what's happening LOL

  17. I am new to this blogging. I try to write it as if I am talking to you. I hope it comes out that way :)

  18. Great article ladies! I loved the tips, I am going to try a couple. Thanks!

  19. Some great tips here! I always try to write a blog that is different to the last and I totally agree with writing as if you were speaking to a friend. One of the freedom's of blog writing for me is that it does have to be correct and proper. And although it does feel a bit strange, I do read my blog out aloud before I post it, because I need to know it sounds 'easy to read'!

  20.
"Write As If You Were Talking To Your Friends" – love this tip. And I have to admit, your posts are always informative and helpful, Angela. That's why I never find any of it boring. Thanks, Angela!

  21. I really enjoyed your suggestions…what we write about is so much easier when we pretend we are talking to someone directly! Thanks!

  22. Awesome post as always :) I have bookmarked so I can use these tips. I will be sharing ;)

  23. Wonderful post Angela, with great tips for any blogger. Writing as if you were talking to a friend is a good one. I try to think of one person my post applies to and focus my writing on them. For my niche, there are so many stories, articles and news casts, it feels easy to find new content. I like the idea of carving out time to read up on your niche – so important.  Thanks – great reminder!!

  24. Great post. I have read far too many blog posts and wondered what they were actually about.  Excellent points.

    • Thanks Marie! I read so much in a day on the internet that if you don’t catch my attention and keep it, you pretty much have lost me! Blog content is a great way to show your personality and interact with your readers.

  25. Love it, I had to overcome a few obstacles myself because English is my second language. I always have somebody read it and correct it after I write my blogpost. But I remember that I kept thinking that I couldn't do this blogging thing. Now, I am totally confident, but I agree e have to be on our toes not be boring..

    • I think that it is amazing that English is your second language! I have read what you write and you are awesome at engaging! Keep up the good blog content. You are proof that anyone CAN do it!

  26. Great post, Angela! I admit that none of your blog posts have ever bored me. Love your voice and the way you write. You always give a lot of great actionable tips as well and I really appreciate that!

    • Thank you soooooo much Sherie! You don’t know how much that means to me. I work really hard at create great blog content for you guys to enjoy. It is good to know it is paying off! And actually as I was writing I was wondering how many people would think my blog content was boring! You see, there is always room for second-guessing. You just have to bite the bullet and do it!

  27. Great post, Angela! I like the tip about writing as if you're speaking! I've learned to do it! I write from my heart and that works well. Thanks for sharing such great info! I truly appreciate reading your posts! You are a natural born writer!

    • Alexandra, you have won my heart! Thank you for your kind words. I do think that writing as if you are speaking to your friends captures the attention of your audience. It makes you easy to relate to and people feel like they can connect with you! Thanks for reading and commenting! You are definitely appreciated!

  28. I've written about this subject on numerous occasions! Why Blogs Bore Me is one of my favorite subjects! haha!  I think people just get lazy.  They don't want to use their noggins to think of new content.  They actually WANT to regurgitate the same old stuff because it requires too much effort to think on their own!  But, here's the thing. . . . the cream always rises to the top.  If you're blog is boring or you're saying nothing new, don't expect anyone to stick around.  Nice post!

    • Love it Martha! The cream does rise to the top! I think that it is easy to get complacent, and even lazy with your content. It’s something we need to all watch out for because content is KING. It is the bread and butter of online marketing. If you can blog, you can sell, and you can attract the right audience to you!

  29. Well!  I've just been told!!!  (-_-)  Just teasing you… tee-hee.  This is a great call to stay away from monotony!  I am paying attention.  Thanks! x0x

  30. We all want to be noticed and successful in what we do …..these are such great tips, not only for your blogs, but for other postings such as twitter, also.  I see so many tweets that have no meaning…just a bunch of hash tags!  So thanks for reminding us all that if we want other people to be interested in what we write….. then…… edit out that boring stuff and stick to your subject!

  31. Write as if you are talking to your friends – probably the most valuable tip. You are engaging with your readers and they are beginning to know and TRUST you. Excellent article. I have to remember the call to action – have a sticky note on my computer for that! :)

  32. Totally agree with these. I am often drawn in by an exciting title but when I start reading it's either the same stuff I've read at a couple of places already, or, even worse, it's as interesting as the wet, sticky mess my cat threw up. Well, even THAT is more interesting.

  33. Thanks for Great advices :D I only wish there was some more hours every day to work!

  34. And remember who you are writing for… my listeners asked me to start writing more on little things I thought everyone knew ( hashtags – manners in social media or even how to engage on twitter before, during and after conferences) or there were plenty others writing about it – their comment was – we come to learn from you not go to read from someone else.  Lesson learned.

    • You know Michele when you are a market and branding nerd you forget what all you know and think is common knowledge. I fell dreadful when I’m talking over my client’s head and I see that blank look on their face because I’m talking about things they have never heard of. Keep it simple silly..;)

  35. Good stuff, Angela!  A lot of people think blogging is easy, but it really requires a strong voice from someone who understands their readers to make a big impact.  And much of that impact comes from good content.  Great tips and suggestions…

    • I love Angela’s voice in her writing. You can tell who she is and how she feels in every word she types. I can’t wait to read what she’s going to write next !

  36. Angela… loved this post. I was in mortgages for 19 +years and had my own blog post regarding mortgages and wrote about that for 4 + years.. My biggest pet peeve were those that put stuff out there that wasn't true. If you aren't sure about it, educate yourself first. So I love # 4… hence why it usually takes me 2 hours or so to write my articles for my new site, MyPhillyAlive.com I only know a little, but want to give my readers the facts and a good experience, so I have to do research…. and it takes time.

In regards to number 1, love that… I don't do it as much as I do, and this now gets me thinking. Sure, I ask them at times to share their experience or thoughts.. but I need to be more creative with some of these… so thanks for the "food for thought" process. Good post.. enjoyed it..  ps.. about me, I hated writing anything from when I was in 3rd grade, through middle school, HS and college. Mortgages were boring, but I had a passion, which made it easy to write. Same re: my new gig now.. All About Philadelphia.. :)

  37. Great tips Angie! I really like #3 and it was the hardest one for me to get because I came to the online world fresh from grad school. The hardest thing I ever had to do was learn how to go from writing "just the facts" to putting my personality into what I write.

  38. Easy bullet points that are great and useful reminders!  Thanks!
