Blog Tips: How Often Should You Be Blogging?

How Often Should You Be Blogging?

We’ve read tons of posts on this subject and it seems like everyone has a different opinion and there is no right or wrong answer.  The only one who can determine how often you should be blogging is you. I am about to give you the best blog tip ever so listen up and take notes.

I know, more non-answers to the same question.  With blogging though, the only way to determine how often to blog is to first determine what your goals are as a blogger.  People blog for different reasons and those differences will determine how often you should be blogging.

What Are Your Goals As A Blogger?

To truly get this blog tip, you have to first identify what your goals are as a blogger.  Are you blogging for your business primarily to help drive more traffic to your site?  Are you blogging to provide value to your readers with the expectation to monetize your blog through ads and affiliate programs? Some people blog for personal reasons with no intention other than to share with others and build a community.  So what are your goals?

Personal Blogging

There are a ton of personal bloggers out there.  Those who’s sole purpose is to simply share with the world their own personal experiences and stories, grow community, and connect with like-minded people. Figuring out how often to blog if you are a personal blogger is simple.  It’s always a good idea to have some consistency.  Create a schedule of some kind and train your readers when to visit your blog for new updates.

The one truth about blogging frequency that rings true no matter what your blog is that the more pages there are on your site to index in search, the more chances you will receive more traffic from search..

Blogging For Business

Blogs that are attached to your business website are a little different in nature.  The main purposes of your blog should be to add value to your readers, establish your authority and expertise in your industry, and to increase search engine traffic.  It would never be a bad thing to blog every day, if you can come up with enough relevant, compelling content, which can be a challenge.

We tell our clients that at a minimum they should be updating their blog twice a week, on consistent days, every week.  If you send out an email twice a week, making those days the same day you update your blog is a good idea, that way you can include the link to your updated info in your emails.

When Blogging Is Your Business

So your blog is your business.  What do you think you should do?  As with any business activity if that is the primary way that you are making your income, or if you want that to be the primary way you make your income, then you should be going blog crazy.

It will be more important for you to have fresh, relevant, engaging content updated very frequently.  You want to have as many pages as you can indexed in search engines, as most of your income will come not for referrals, but from search engine traffic.  If blogging is your business then you should blog everyday.

If you can’t imagine updating your blog that often, or find that you have trouble coming up with content at that rate, then fill your days with guest posts to help out and also bring additional traffic to your site.  The more you blog, the more you will be successful at driving traffic to your blog.  And when blogging is your income, traffic matters a great deal.

So to sum it up, there is no real answer.  But one thing is for sure- consistency is key.  And there is no way to deny the benefits of blogging more often.  What are some things you have learned about the frequency of blogging?  Do you have any blog tips to share with us?  We would love to hear your thoughts in the comments.

  1. Great info and comments!  I'm am recently new to blogging and promoting and establishing my brand. It seems everyday could be a little tough if you also work full-time and only have a little time in the evenings to establish good content. It seems every other day may be a good choice for me. Again, thanks for all the info!

  2. This is a hard one, there are 2 real schools of thought here, adding content regularly is great for Google, it is great for keeping the site looking active but it can give too much content for your readers to keep up with and can put people off. It can bury good posts quickly pushing them down the page meaning they may be overlooked and not shared. Where as if you write once a week or even longer than that your really good post can be seen by loads of people, which means it could be shared more on social networks driving more traffic to your site as well as not putting off visitors as they can handle reading one or two new posts and not hundreds.
People want to learn and read your stuff but one truth most people over look, is this, in general most people don't like hard work and if you are offering solutions to problems but offer so many solutions in one go, people will look for sites with less to read, reading is work and time consuming. Some of the biggest business blogs aka Pat Flynn and Glen Allsopp do not blog everyday, nor do they blog every week.

    • I think you make some valid points Andi! It is two schools of thought. I think that each person has to find what’s right from them. I still do believe for younger blogs to gain more traction and have more pages indexed in search that they should blog more often. But I think it is also about getting to know your audience and what they expect, and what they want from you. Great points you brought up! Thanks for stopping by!

  3. Only once a week.. Don't know if I can do more !

  4. Great work here. Michael Hyatt, author of Platform, Get Noticed in a Noisy World says that if you aren't ready to blog regularly (3 days a week by his measure) you're not ready to blog (unless you are a hobby blogger). This has made me push my goal to 4 days a week.
I spend all day Monday writing blog posts and schedule them to go out regularly during the week

  5. I agree that if a business blog should have at least one blog per day. Fresh content is so important for many reasons these days and there are many success stories from people who just simply starting writing blogs for their business.

  6. Interesting things to think about.  My husband blogs daily – its a year long project and I'm not sure what will happen at the end of the year!!  One thing about daily is that its a tiny window to promote and then its on to the next…..For our entertainment business we have only blogged maybe three times.  Working on making that a more regular thing!  Thanks for the post.  :)

  7. Great post!. As for me, I also do it twice a week – on Mondays and Wednesdays.

  8. Great tips here. I usually tell my clients new to blogging 1-2 times a week, and over time make it 2-3. It is very important to keep fresh content today.

  9. I am currently blogging 2-3 times per week.  I also write for others too so I am writing all the time!  Whatever works for you and your audience! Great article!

  10. For me personally, twice a week, Monday's and Thursdays are a consistent blog and article post times to keep building rapport for business.  If you're blogging for other reasons, well, for sure, the timing is different and varied!  loved the article, great job!

  11. Great advice thank you.
