“Haunted by Facebook Edgerank ghoulish drop? The new Trick to Treating Fans”

"Haunted by Facebook Edgerank ghoulish drop? The new Trick to Treating Fans"

Did you know that no matter how many fans you have on Facebook that only a few of them will see your post in their news feeds? I'm guessing if you are like me, using Facebook to build your business, you already knew that. Ever wonder why some people seem to be able to engage their fans no matter what they post? Even if they posted the same stinking picture or quote that you did? Well, they would most likely have a better Facebook Edgerank than you. What the heck is Edgerank? Edgerank is an algorithm developed by  Facebook to determine who sees your posts  and how high on their Newsfeed that your posts are seen.*

The three factors that makes up this algorithm is what helps you stay in the newsfeeds of your fans no matter where they spend most of their time on Facebook.
Facebook’s Edgerank  is determine by these factors:

From WildFire's White Paper:

FaceBook Edgerank drop and how it affects you.First, there is  an affinity score between the viewing user and the creator – if you send your college friend a lot of Facebook messages and check their profile often, then you’ll have a higher affinity score for that person than you would with the person  you added on Facebook but haven’t interacted with in months. Likewise, if fan interacts with a brand by visiting its Facebook brand page or interacting with its posts, this will boost the affinity score between this brand and its fan

Second, there’s a weight given to each type of Edge. While it has not been confirmed by Facebook, testing has shown that content types that take more time to engage with have higher weight. For example, an engagement weights less than a comment, most likely because hitting the"Like" button is a much easier action.

and finally there’s the most logical factor – time. The older an Edge is, the less important it becomes.

Here are The Tricks to staying in the newsfeeds of your fans.

1.Write more Text in Status updates

The easiest way to engage with your followers and fans is to keep your business updated with simple texts. A way to increase your Facebook EdgeRank is to create lengthy messages that make the user to click on the link to see the rest of the text status. A lot of online organizations, including magazines, are utilizing this technique to increase their EdgeRank and user engagement. The higher the quality of the text and the more effort you put in it, the higher the chance is of it getting shared by your followers and fans.
This technique is not new; however, it is still effective in helping you increase your EdgeRank. This technique involves a lot of testing and implementing. If you can manage to find the right time to post your message, you could increase your page engagement to a great extent. The key to this is to understand your audience: How old are they? Where are they located? When will they typically be on Facebook?

2.Ask for What you Want

Instead of posting a photo with no comment or a plain boring text message hoping your audience will pass it around and keep sharing your content, you should first engage in the action. Ask your fans directly to do what you want: share the photo, give opinion, like your post, share your content, or answer a question. The key here is to be polite, professional and not too needy. You don’t want to create a thought that you are begging for attention.

3.Post to Your Fan page Regularly

Don’t expect to have a good Edgerank if you only post an update now and then. There is a fine line to be walked with your fans as to what they would like to see and spamming them to the point they get annoyed and block you from their feeds.
Facebook advertising is an art. You have to keep up to date with all the latest developments in Facebook marketing to be able to tap into the free traffic source that Facebook can bring you. Social Media is constantly changing and the only way to stay on top is to research, try new things, and constantly monitor what is working and what is not.

I had not considered the value of longer post to further increase "engagement." Is the new trend to be more wordy? If so, I'll have to re-evalutate my facebook post from auto posting on Twitter because they'll be too long for that platform.

Your finishing line is my favourite: SM is always changing and we have to keep testing new strategies. Our audience might also change and even the time at which they engage the most change according to the seasons. Great article. Thanks!

Thank you for those strategies.  That affinity thing has been bugging me a while as I've noticed my less active friends and family don't show up in my newsfeed even when they are actually on FB!  I've had to add them to lists so I can actively check in on them.  Your advice is critical for business seeking to reach their followers.
