How does Alexa rank work?

To improve Alexa ranking  you must have a lower score rather than higher. The lower your Alexa Ranking  the score, the better. You can check your score at Alexa.com

Your score is affected by a few things:

How many sites link to your website and how important they are? In other words what’s their score.

How many of your pages are review by people with an Alexa tool bar. (We’ll cover that in a minute)

What kind of reviews your site has received. You receive reviews on there kinda like Amazon. The more reviews you have the better.

Improve Alexa Ranking

Install their tool bar. I have one and yes it helps. I have the Alexa for my internet explorer and a chrome extension that you can get at the Google Chrome store. It helps your score to have one.  I have one at this link if you just want one already made. You can custom build one by registering on Alexa.

Join a group that supports and visits the members’ blogs. They have a tool bar most likely and you’ll see a big improvement in your score.

Swap reviews with people or ask for them. People are usually very happy to get one and will give you one in return.

Get those Backlinks.

A simple way to get back links is to comment on other people’s blog with relevant comments. Please spare us the spam. I said relevant. Do NOT go buy a program to give you comment backlinks. They do not work and you will get banned as fast as quick can get ready from everyone that sees that mess. Read the blog and leave a comment that shows you read the post. The Blogger is happy to get the comment and you get a backlink. Simple and you will learn something watch and see.

Do guest post, this is an excellent way to get a great backlink. See it’s not that hard.

I have a free report about how I blogged my way to the top of Alexa Rank and Google in my side bar in less than 90 days. If you want more advice get the report. Today my score is 93k world-wide. That means of the billions of sites out there mine is in the top 100k as far as traffic is concerned.  That’s an awesome score. Less is more on Alexa.

  1. Your rank is fantastic compared to our little site! We definitely need to guest post and get some backlinks. I've heard that more opportunities exist under 150k on Alexa, but we aren't really close yet. Is that accurate?

  2. Pat Moon says:

Thanks for giving the ins & outs of an Alexa Ranking.. btw, congratulations on your score.

    • Elizabeth says:

Thanks Pat! I worked really hard to get it there. I have talent people working on editing and writing while I used my social media and SEO. It’s a group effort!..;)

  3. This is a REALLY good article and timely for me.  I heard about Alexa in Sept, but just starting connecting the dots about 3 weeks ago, on my own.  This post confirms it to me that this is where my attention needs to be!

So with Alexa, there are two numbers, this post talked about the RANKING but do you have a post that talks about the Reputation?

Also, can you tell me if I should be more focused on the Global numbers verses the US numbers? @Forthisseason shared this with me just recently and I'm thrilled she did!

    • Elizabeth says:

That depends on whether your products can help people on other regions or your blog topics. If you want your sites to have a good worldwide Alexa rank then yes, it’s rank from other countries matters.

  4. Todd says:

I'm not a fan of adding the tool bar, but backlinks certainly help boost it a bit. Good tips!

  5. Thanks for sharing the knowledge Elizabeth!!! :)

Could you please let us know your opinion, in reagrds to installing alexa widget locally in a website?
I have heard that it converts users who are not having the toolbar installed, into countable alexa users, but at the same time other resources claim that we should not take this into account!

    Many Thanks in advance!
    Greetings from Athens, Greece.

  6. Jessica says:

Thank you for writing this post.
After months of successful ranking on Alexa (in the 100 k's), I suddenly started to go up again for no apparent reason. Your post has given me some answers as to why this was and better yet some pointers on what to do about it.

  7. Mani says:

Alexa toolbar helps a lot.I have it for chrome and firefox both

  8. 90 days!  Awesome!  I recently researched articles analyzing Alexa.  You did a great job presenting what Alexa is all about.  I love the fact that there are tools to help you measure website popularity and rank.  Great post!

  9. Alexa is such a great tool! You have spelled it out in such clear terms. I use the toolbar for Firefox. Do you think there’s an advantage to having it in several browsers?

  10. Sally K Witt says:

    Great information and well presented.

  11. Pat Moon says:

Thank you for this article on Alexa Ranking. I am struggling with my score but am making progress. I just went and installed their toolbar so will see how that helps. I believe not being consistent has been an issue with me so I'm also working on that. You have been a great encourager to keep at it.. Thanks. BTW, your score is quite impressive.. good job.

  12. Sonya says:

Great article. I do watch my Alexa and have the toolbar as it's great to use when visiting other sites. It helps to get a picture of how you are doing. You explained it really well and interesting on the backlinks.

  13. Thanks for the great information! I love how the Alexa toolbar works in firefox because you can see it without clicking on anything. Is there a way to make the Chrome extension work the same way?

  14. Edmund Lee says:

You're doing amazing work here!  I've always found it funny that Alexa scores are actually better the lower they get, but then again, it is what it is.  Lastly, WOW WOW WOW on the 93k ranking Liz!

  15. Vicky says:

Thanks for my intro to Alexa.  Looking forward to reading your report.

  16. Love, love, love this Liz! Thanks for sharing your great knowledge on Alexa.

  17. Aww. I have not monitoring Alexa ranking. I think I want dear Alexa too and want to meet her, First thing,  I didn't know that she exist :) . Thanks for the useful tips, I will check on this one soon :)

  18. Helena says:

Great tips Liz! I've been paying more attention to my Alexa numbers as of late, but had no idea that the toolbar played a role. I will be installing that today. Thanks!

  19. Love this article.  We've had our new site open for just two weeks and have dropped from 16 million Alexa down to 2.6 mill Alexa in just the past 6 days.  I really think that engagement is the key.  We haven't been doing anything fancy but we do have a VERY devourable site :)  Our Google Analytics has us at 14 minutes average staying power with 5 and 6 pages devoured by most visitors before they move on.
We're excited to really understand all the aspects of online business–love this very thorough outline of Alexa…I hadn't thought of the toolbar or a sharing group with toolbar. We'll have to look for those!

  20. RmilitaryR says:

Elizabeth, thanks for the tips on improving Alexa ranking, especially the one on how many reviews your site has. I will work on that.
    Best of success in blogging.

  21. Awesome post as usual!  I will start taking a harder look at all,of this like we talked about on the phone this morning!

  22. Susan Myers says:

Thanks Liz!  Mine was as low as 193,000 then recently it has gone up to the 300's.  I will have to read more of the report you mentioned to figure it all out.  Thanks again for all the valuable information you share.

  23. Great information about why we want a low score on Alexa, to have a toolbar and why it's important to be genuine online, too.

  24. Lorii Abela says:

Great post, Liz! Very well stated and thanks for sharing to us the importance of Alexa ranking.

  25. I understood less is more but didn't fully 'get' the 'how'. Thanks for explaining!

  26. Fabulous information! I've seen so many suggestions on posts that tell me to check my Alexa ranking but none telling me why! This answers all my questions. Thank you Elizabeth

  27. denny hagel says:

Great information! Although familiar with Alexa I was not aware of the review process! Thanks!

  28. Good article. Alexa rankings and all that is involved still kind of puzzle me. I'm hoping to learn enough to make sense of it all at some point.

  29. Jamie says:

And the SEO tools are so important in helping your alexa rank.  I saw the difference myself in just 3 months.  =)

  30. Kim Hawkins says:

I guess I'm not as competitive as I should be. I've looked at my Alexa ranking but never once considered looking at anyone else's. If the content, title or person interests me, that in itself gets me to reading. Something else to ponder.

  31. Anita says:

Mine has been up and down and with the new changes coming down from Google I am hearing that back links are taking a back seat…Is that true? I am NOT an SEO guru..lol!!

    • Elizabeth says:

gotcha.. well they are important but the most important is keyword correctly done, good content and engagement on social media.. they are indexing twitter mentions of your company now.. add that harsh tag..;)of your cdompany// so that when it’s retweeted .. well your company name is mentioned..;)

  32. Wow! I'd only heard of Alexa — this is such a helpful explanation. Thank you!

  33. Olga Hermans says:

I always have looked at my Alexa ranking and hated it when I saw it change; I have my toolbar and find myself  checking it when I visit an interesting site. I didn't know that we could as for a review, I always wondered how some sites have reviews and others don't. I might ask you for a review Elizabeth!! :)

  34. Liz, you sure do know how to get a fabulous Alexa ranking in no time flat! Great tips!!!  I will have to download your free report. Thanks so much~

  35. I've had the toolbar for most of a year and I love looking at it once in awhile. Gives me an idea on how I'm doing!  It's not all about the numbers, just makes it interesting.  Thanks. Great info.

    • Elizabeth says:

You are so right! I’m so competive! I want to “Win” the search term and that comes from my years of fighting for placement in Search. If you got the term you earned the money!

  36. Laurie says:

I never did understand Alexa.  Thanks so much for the post.

  37. Sherie says:

I have the Alexa toolbar installed on Chrome.  Great tips for improving Alexa ranking, Elizabeth! We all want that, right? ; )

  38. Hey, Wait!, I'm after Alexa myself!

  39. I do have the Alexa toolbar. It is a wonderful thing as long as we don't get toooo caught up in the numbers :)

    • Elizabeth says:

It is.. the numbers are important.. but not more important that what gets you there..;) content and engagement..;) to improve Alexa Ranking you do the same thing we talk about to have a good blog..;) it all ties together !

  41. Sharon O'Day says:

My worldwide Alexa's been down as low as 200K (last year) and now is somewhere around 290K.  I understand its importance and do monitor it … in fact I have the mini toolbar on my site so I can check the ranking of each site I visit.  But I do feel the competition's increased over time, so I look forward to reading the report you offer in your post.  Thanks, Liz!

  42. Lawrence says:

Way to go Liz. Now I want dear Alexa
