It is so easy to get caught up in the latest trends in marketing activities. Sometimes I have found myself trying to mold my marketing efforts into what "he" is doing, because I loved it so much. I just read a post on Copyblogger and my gosh, I am PUMPED up to say the least. And really it has me thinking, "why don't we do something different?"
As we all struggle to get our marketing strategies together and follow in the footsteps of the "greats" of marketing we often forget how the"greats" came to be that way. Here's what I know:
The "Greats" were not ALWAYS the "Greats".
They started from zero, from square one, just as we all did. So what separates them from the rest of the "not so greats"? Well, hard work and dedication to being great is a dead given, but what about their ability to be unique and blaze new trails? Trailblazers, forward thinkers, those who are doing things different FIRST. Those with good sense and courage, those with the ability to fail hard or achieve great are the people we admire and should emulate. Not what they are doing but the way they did it!
What Do Your Marketing Activities Say About You?
Are you spending all of your time modeling what others are doing in marketing? Or are you trying new things? Good marketers do what others have done before and succeeded doing, great marketers pioneer new strategies, make their own way. Sure there is a time and place for the tried and true methods. The same methodical, even boring and predictable methods that have worked.
It's not easy to be a pioneer, to try something new. You may even be wondering how you can even begin to change your thinking about your marketing activities. Let me give you this food for thought,
You have a unique voice: Give yourself permission to use it!
The biggest mistake anyone can make is trying to be like someone else. The best marketers are original, but that's because they use their voice, which is always original and unique to you.
What You Should Do NOW
Now you should take a moment to identify your voice. It's one thing to understand basic marketing principles, and another thing to use your voice to define your marketing activities and strategy. Ask yourself these questions:
What am I really good at?
What do I have that is unique to me?
How do I like to be marketed to?
How do I want to make my audience feel?
What do I want them to do?
How do I want them to feel about me and my company?
These are all questions that will help you find your particular voice and marketing style. The greatest thing about marketing is that there are no real rules. You can be free to express yourself and represent your business the way YOU want to. So get after it. And be you, be different. Let's shake it up a bit!
