Should my SEO Strategy Include Twitter?

How Twitter and SEO can be BBFS

Let me get to the point.  The answer (you've probably guessed) is, "Yes."  But not for the reason you might think.

How to Use Twitter to Boost Your SEOIf you're new to using Twitter as part of your social media strategy, you've probably seen a lot of Tweets from people who don't know squat about using it. So you see these Tweets that look a lot like spam, because they are just message after message about "read my blog" or "see this amazing widget for sale on my site," or "Yes, you can make a million dollars overnight with a blog, if you just click here."

And if you know anything about the art and science of optimizing your posts to be found in search, you might think that the reason people are tweeting like that has to do with creating lots of inbound links to their website.

Unfortunately for them, this is NOT how to use Twitter for SEO!

Don't get me wrong – there are a lot of not very informed people using Twitter for SEO that way.  But it's just not how Twitter works, and here is why.

Say you own AWellManicuredLawn.com, and it advertises your landscaping service.  You've gotten great backlinks in from other websites, including several from 365DaysofGreenerGrass.com, the top ranked site having information and products related to fertilizing and whatever else it takes to have a gorgeous lush green lawn all year round.

Now the Google SpiderBot crawls the Greener Grass site, and sees a link in from that site, and follows it to your site and notices it’s a related site with updated content and decent traffic.  That backlink or inbound link from a high authority site in your field boosts your position in Google search results.

Now let's go back to Twitter.  If you start Tweeting links to all of your posts thinking that, well, Twitter is a high authority site, so it must give great benefit to get as many links as possible to your site via Tweeting, here's the catch.  Twitter does something a little different with its coding, and makes all of those Tweeted links into "nofollow" links.  This means that in the coding for the site,  it tells the Google spiderbot not to crawl those links.  So while they're there, they don't actually do anything in terms of creating backlinks.

However- Twitter still has immense value for you in terms of SEO, and there's a possibility that Tweeted links could benefit you from a backlink perspective.

No, I didn't just contradict myself.  Here's what I mean.

There are more and more websites that are choosing to include a plugin to aggregate and display Twitter feeds.  The websites with said aggregated feeds can choose to make the links in those feeds "nofollow" or "follow" links.  So – there's a chance that your links could count for you in terms of inbound links.

However – you don't even have to rely on a "maybe" scenario to gain powerful SEO from your Twitter account!

Honestly – the ways to use Twitter to boost your SEO are just about endless!

For starters, while inbound links from Twitter don't necessarily count as backlinks for Google when they're on Twitter, Google does actually index Tweets!  And this is one of many huge reasons to make sure you know as many ways as possible for using Twitter to boost your SEO.

How to Use Twitter to Boost Your SEO

1.Choose a good handle that reflects your business.

Preferably make this the same as your business name, your website name, the names of your other profiles, etc.

2.Optimize your bio

Include your website in your Twitter bio. Make sure to include 2 or 3 relevant keywords as well.

3.Use keywords when you include links in your Tweets

Google includes Tweets in search results, so make sure you're including links as appropriate in ways that add value, not spam. Include a few relevant keywords as well, so you'll be more likely to be found in searches for your niche.

4.Include one or two relevant hashtags (words preceded with the # symbol)

These help organize Tweets that are connected, in addition to helping signify when topics are trending on Twitter.

5.Tweet throughout the day

Make sure that you are spreading out your Tweets throughout the day rather than bulk posting at once.

6.Include a Twitter button

One of the best ways to get your content out there is to include a Twitter button to tweet your content!  Sounds simple, but it's amazing how many people don't do this!  And for a bonus, make sure it has settings where you can include your own Twitter handle in with the Tweet when it goes out.

7.Create great content

You know we're big on quality content here, right?  It definitely contributes to your search optimization on Twitter, and here's how.

If you have average content, chances are, unless you're part of a network of people who are helping you get more shares and views for your content, it won't get shared.  Sorry, but ho hum content that reads like a high school report really doesn't get shared an overwhelming amount.

So it gets Tweeted – maybe even to a big list – and then it goes nowhere.

But if you're creating great business blog content that is valuable to your customers, chances are, they'll want to share it.  And when that happens, your message develops legs – it gets seen by a wider audience than if you blasted it to a huge list that did nothing with it.

It's the power of math and exponents.  Not that I like exponents or anything.  However, I love them when they work for me!

Quality content tweeted on a regular basis, from your well optimized profile is the key to having a Twitter account that seriously boosts your SEO.

Does Your Twitter Business Feed Make You Look like A Liar?

Does Your Twitter Business Feed Make You Look like A Liar?

twitter business feed

One of my favorite things as a social media manager and blogger is connecting with my audience – I love to be able to provide value, and I love it when an article hits that nerve that gets everyone talking at once!

Monday's article on content marketing seems to have done just that; I'm always so thrilled when I'm able to provide solid value for my readers!

So I wanted to follow up with one on a similar note about Twitter. Specifically – Does your Twitter feed make you look like a liar? Here's what I mean. When you post to Twitter, re-tweet someone, or favorite a tweet, what's your strategy? Are you just looking for any old thing to post, or are you systematic and strategic?

If you're not being intentional in your content on Twitter, you could easily be shooting yourself in the foot – and that's the best case scenario of "what could possibly go wrong." If you really "step in it," you could make yourself appear hypocritical or even like an out and out liar.

Your business has things it stands for. Or at least I hope it does. If not, you really need to take a look at that. But assuming you have, you have values, a mission and a vision, or something like those things. Every single piece of content you produce needs to support that. And I don't mean just your blog, either. All of your social media platforms need to be consistent in promoting your brand's message. If they're not, it could be disastrous.

Twitter is one that is easy to take very lightly – it's only 140 characters, after all. But those 140 characters make it very, very easy to be so casual that you goof, Tweet something that doesn't match the big picture of what your brand stands for, and be in "Hurt City" when it all blows up.

Ways Your Twitter Strategy Could Make You Look Like a Liar

1. Watch your Re-tweets

Re-tweeting is a great strategy to build your connections on social media. But – you need to make sure whatever you're re-tweeting (and favoring, for that matter), is consistent with your brand's values. Otherwise, you end up looking seriously hypocritical – like your values are there just as words on a page and something you don't actually *live* by or do business by.

2. Make sure you're providing serious value

If you're using Twitter to promote your business, honestly – you need to be providing value, not just promoting yourself in every single tweet. To be 100% truthful with you – it looks like spam when you just self promote. And – if every tweet could be sung to the tune of "How Great I Art," it looks like you've got to be lying about yourself. Don't be that person! Make sure you're leading with value, promoting yourself when appropriate – but humbly (let your product or service speak for itself), and be sure to be willing to be human, too. No one is perfect.

3. Choose your conversations wisely

Similar to re-tweets – make sure you're conversing wisely on social media. Old tweets have a habit of showing up at just the wrong time, especially if they're embarrassing at all. Your conversations on Twitter are public – make sure you're tweeting in ways that you and your brand would be proud to have found on Google now and in the future, not to mention having them found by your grandma or minister.

using twitter for business to build your traffic to your blogYour twitter buddies will enjoy reading what you write if they like what you have to tweet! Those tweets and to be more than links to your latest posts, more than quotes and not just about what’s great about you. Engage. Hi @twitterfriend what’s up? Hiya (Name) @twitterfriend how’s it going? Yes, talk to people and listen to what they say.  Search a topic and location in search.twitter.com in the advanced setting and name your topic then listen. Ah, there’s a good one. They are talking about my favorite football team. I’m hoping in that conversation. Presto, you have new friends.

Follow people that are likely to follow you back. If someone is following 500 accounts and has 20k followers, they aren’t likely to engage with you. People who follow close to the same amount of accounts as they follow are out there to engage and see what you have to say.

The cool thing about Twitter is # tags. If you tag it in the appropriate category anyone that searches that topic can find it. You get to be in the awesome twitter search engine under the topic YOU pick. That takes some time in Google.

Engage with people and don’t just broadcast your post.

Follow people who are interesting in the same thing as you.

Use the right hash tags.

If you use twitter the right way it’s a goldmine of traffic that can send your IDEAL client crawling up in your lap. Pretty simple way to get that blog traffic we all crave. My number one traffic source is Google search but in a close second is twitter. I love twitter. My first two paying clients came to me from twitter relationships.

If You Can’t Say Something Nice, Don’t Say It On Twitter!

Twitter For Business – Advice on What Not to Do!

In my last article, I told a story about a newcomer to social media who offered a large social media contract for her company's business based on the power of a single thoughtful thank you for a Tweet some months before.

What happens when the interaction goes the other way? When a company is thoughtless, rude, or flippant, and it goes viral?

Anyone catch what happened a couple of weeks ago now that NFL football season is underway?

don't vent on twitter if your in businessNormally I'm a college football fan (Auburn!), but it seems the Kansas City Chiefs need a lesson in how to talk to their fans – the disgruntled ones – on social media.

Here's how it went down.  A long time  KC Chiefs fan tweeted a friend about his perspective on the team's management.  Specifically, he used a few, shall we say, choice words referencing both the Chiefs' losing record and the salaries of its owners. Now, his Tweet was pretty bad.  But the KC Chiefs staffer who responded did so in a way that was snarky and rude. Then blocked him on Twitter.

Now, it just so happened that this particular fan wasn't just any old fan. He was one with a job of, you guessed it, social media management.  So he started a Reddit thread about the whole thing that started taking on a life of its own.

Eventually, someone from the team apologized via Twitter to the original disgruntled fan. Unfortunately, because they'd blocked him on Twitter, well you guessed it. He couldn't see the apology.

The story went viral! The fan appeared on local television stations, several radio shows, and even Yahoo picked up the story.

Now, my momma taught me that if you don't have anything nice to say, you shouldn't say it at all. And you certainly shouldn't shout it from the rooftops.

That's kind of like Twitter. And the fan shouldn't have tweeted something that rude, in my opinion. But the Kansas City Chiefs should have known better, too. And to respond to any fan (aka customer) like that is a big ol' no-no for a major brand!  In the end, in that kind of conversation on Twitter, the party who will always end up looking bad is the brand, not the customer.

Ways NOT to Respond to Negative Customer Feedback On Social Media

Ignore It
If a customer posts negative feedback online, ignoring it will not make it go away. It only makes it get worse. I can't say it much plainer than that!
Match It
Do not respond to a negative comment in kind. I promise, the only one who will look bad is you.
Fake Apology
Do not respond with a fake apology. Nothing, nothing, nothing can kill your engagement like hypocrisy or anything that looks like it.
Delete It
Removing critical feedback never works. Repeat after me:  Removing negative feedback never works. Somehow, someone will always see it. All it does Is make you look worse.

Do you have a story of having to respond to negative customer feedback via social media? I'd love to hear!

Social Media Return on Investment: Engagement brings results

Social Media Return On Investment -

There once was a champion of all things social media, who built an enormous following on platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and others.

She practiced what she preached, so each day she took time to start conversations, respond to those who tweeted, and practice simple manners.  Saying things like thank you.  Things that weren't exactly about social media return on investment, but things she did nonetheless.

So one day, she started her day doing what she always did. She spent time searching out those who had found her message valuable and had shared it, and she responded to their generosity of spirit.

On this particular day, she did the same.  Just like always, social media return on investment was the farthest thing from her mind.  And on this day, one of those thanked included a boutique owner new to social media but determined to learn from the best how to build her business using this technology.

After looking at this particular boutique owner's profile to learn more about her, the social media champion sent back a kind of message she always did.  "Thanks for the RT – how's your day going?"

The boutique owner was surprised that someone with tens of thousands of followers (not to mention a sizeable social media business) might take the time to respond personally respond to someone with so few followers.  She wondered why someone so savvy would engage her, without any obvious social media return on investment at that very moment.  And as a result, she began listening, subscribing, and purchasing everything that came from her newfound mentor about building engagement and business on social media.

Her new teacher announced a conference about the very subject of return on investment in social media.  She bought the first ticket, along with assorted other items.

At the conference, the boutique owner sat at a table with a variety of other business owners.  Her table mates included a woman with her own social media consulting and management business, not to mention a sweet Southern accent that she'd paid to try to lose in the name of sounding more "professional" and "less Southern belle." She'd failed at losing it completely.  She also had a passion for teaching other women, moms, to use the tools of social media. "Return on investment" in her mind was creating enough business for herself and other moms to allow them to stay home and raise their children without always having to worry about money.

The boutique owner happened to love all things Southern, and was utterly charmed by this woman with a gentle drawl who lived her passion of empowering moms in business.

And, for the first time being totally herself, Southern accent, values and all, the boutique owner and the new social media consultant talked on and on.  And very naturally, they came to the point in their conversation where they both realized she'd be more effective in her business by outsourcing her social media.  Return on investment would just be higher, outsourcing to a professional social media consulting firm, rather than trying to do it all herself.

From a Tweet of thanks, to a conversation infused with simple honesty and integrity, to a sizeable social media contract.  This is the power of engagement and social media done right.  This is the real potential of social media return on investment.

If I could give you just one takeaway from my story (hard to make it just one!), it would be this:  Be yourself.

It's so tempting to try to be an impersonal professional and leave the real you out of the picture.  But time and time again I see this in my own business:  People want to interact with real people, not cardboard shells.  And while some people might not like the real you, other people – your ideal client – absolutely will, and seek you out to do business, if you just let them!!!

How To Use Twitter For a Business

What's a Twitter List?

I'm guessing if you've used Twitter lists, you think of them as a great tool for getting organized on social media. And you'd be correct.use twitter for businessOr maybe you also think of them as one of the best ways you can use the power of Twitter for a business, helping you network, getting you connected with the most influential people in your niche.  You'd be right there, too. But did you know that lists are also great tools to use Twitter for a business, especially when it comes to search engine optimization (aka SEO)?  Did You realize Twitter lists let you harness the power of Google search to help people find you when they're searching in your niche?

You didn't know that?  Let's talk more!

Here's the thing.  Search engines, especially Google, love Twitter lists.  Within the HTML code for Twitter lists, there are tags and links.  And if you've checked out my articles that spell out how I climbed to the top of Alexa rankings in 90 days, getting my articles on to page 1 of Google, you'll know that the process of optimizing pages for SEO is all about tags and links.

Okay Here you go, the tips to creating a lead generating magnet that draws search engine attention to your Twitter profile  :

Choose Your Username:  Your username is the first step toward optimizing your Twitter profile for search engine magnetism.  One of the best ways to choose your name on Twitter is to use your first and last names.  However, you might have a name twin who has already gotten that username. In that case, use other keywords from your niche as part of your username – such as RealEstateJane, SocialMediaRob and the like. My company name wouldn't fit so I have to put on my thinking cap. Humm How am I known and what am I marketing? Ask yourself these questions. Then tie it together in a pretty bow that has SEO value for your business. I hear your wheels turning from here !

Choose Your List Names:  Your list names are the second important piece of Twitter profile real estate for maximizing the SEO power of your Twitter profile.  So think wisely about keywords in your niche, related to your location, or sub sections of the services you offer.

List Key People:  Go find the social Media Stars in your industry make a list and put them on it! Bingo! You have created value for your twitter name and you can engage with these super stars in a tidy little list. Now How Cool is that?

How to optimize your Twitter lists for SEO might not be obvious for every business and niche.  But if you to think about your product or services, your location, your partner industries, etc., you can likely come up with many (up to 20) different lists that you can strategically name to take advantage of the SEO benefits that come from carefully named Twitter lists. Come on you can do this !

And here's how all of this matters to you.  Once you build your Twitter lists, naming each one in a way that includes a strategic keyword, Google indexes Twitter lists, just like other content online.  And Google likes it when information is confirmed across multiple sites online, in terms of building your credibility. So when your business name, keywords about your business and your business name show up in places like your Twitter lists, Google remembers this information, increasing its perception of your credibility because of it. Make Sense ? Get To It!

One Cool Trick To Get Facebook Likes That We Love

get more FaceBook Likes, Trick to get more Facebook likesEveryone wants to get Facebook likes.  No matter how many you have, there is something strangely satisfying and validating to see the numbers of “fans” that you have climb well into the thousands.  Maybe it is Facebook’s little trick to call them “fans” and “likes” that works really well to get all of us so pumped to get them.

These days you can buy fans, participate in liking ladders, and basically sell your soul for a little ole’ like, but there is nothing more gratifying than earning a “real” like.  And there is no better way to get Facebook likes than to simply ask for them.

How To Use Twitter DM To Get Facebook Likes

Unless you have loads of traffic coming to your blog from the awesome content that you are delivering and just have to stay connected to you through Facebook, you are going to have to come up with a strategy to BUILD your fan base.  The one strategy that we have used time and time again and had great success with is the Twitter DM.

What To Say To Get People To “Like” You

Crafting your DM is fairly simple.  What you want to do is be very conversational and genuine.  And then you want to ask for exactly what you want in a way that is about “connecting” and getting to know more about each other.

Remember, social media is about RELATIONSHIPS.  Being genuine is a must.  I also like the idea of asking them if they have a page as well.  It shows that you are truly interested in connecting, which you should be, not just generating likes.

” Hi, thanks for the follow.  Do you have a Facebook Page as well?  Here’s my link _________ what’s yours?”

How To Deliver Your DM

Are you using an automated DM on Twitter?  You know, when someone follows you they automatically receive a message from you asking you to do something or just making contact with you in some way, perhaps thanking you for the follow?  I was torn about using this method to get Facebook likes because I have not been the biggest fan of the automated Twitter DM.

Good news, if you don’t like the auto DM function, you can always do it manually.  Make sure you set your twitter settings to send you notifications when someone new follows you and then log in and shoot them a quick DM which should always include a link.

Easy enough? It is such a simple thing, that can have loads of impact.

Now it’s your turn.  What methods are you using to get likes on Facebook? Share with us what has worked for you and what hasn’t.  Also if you haven’t already, like us on Facebook.  Can’t wait to see you there!

The Power Of Networking

I love Social Media.  Yes, I use it for business, and it is absolutely essential for growing your business and connecting with your customers.  BUT… the thing about social media that is truly amazing, the part that you don't hear about very often, is the power of networking through social media. Here's Our Little Secret- Everything that we have accomplished here at Assist Social Media was birthed from the power of networking.  Networking through twitter to be exact.

Automation is great, and it is definitely needed in social media.  There is just too much to do, and too many networks.  What I want you to get, I mean really get, is that you being present on your social networks and actively interacting with your followers/fans cannot be substituted.  Do you outsource your social media management? Even better.  Don't think that just because someone is handling your social media that you can't get in there and network.  In fact, you have an even greater opportunity to get in there and do some effective networking.

So What Is Networking Exactly?

Imagine yourself at a cocktail party.  You are moving around the room, meeting different people from all walks of life, making small talk, learning more and more about them, and connecting with them.  The most important part of networking is to always remember that at the root of it all is RELATIONSHIPS.  Not sales, not thinking about what you can get out of the interaction, just relationships.  If you go into networking with a closed mind or with only sales in mind, then you will miss out on the greater benefits that it can offer.

Some Cool Ways To Network

Facebook Groups- One of my favorites.  Use Facebook search to find groups relevant to your industry, then interact within them.  You already know that the people in them have similar interest.  Jump in and start the conversation.  You can also start your own group.

LinkedIn Groups Same concept as Facebook groups, just on LinkedIn

Twitter- by far, my favorite.  It is so easy on Twitter to reach out and touch someone.  Find people in your industry by search for a particular topic like "social media" or following industry leaders and checking out the lists they are members of and lists they are subscribed to.  Lists are a great way to network and find people with the same interest as you.
